Sultan Saodat Ensemble
The family necropolis of the Termez sayyids: domed brick mausoleums of the 10th to 17th centuries joined around a long courtyard, one of the most complete medieval ensembles in southern Uzbekistan.
About
The Sultan Saodat ensemble grew over some seven centuries around the graves of the Termez sayyids, a dynasty of religious nobility who traced their descent from the Prophet Muhammad and wielded great influence in the city from the 10th century onwards. Tradition links the founding burial to Sayyid Hasan al-Amir, the ancestor of the family.
Architecture
The oldest part is a pair of square domed mausoleums of the 10th–11th centuries, later linked by a vaulted iwan between them. Over the following centuries mausoleums, a mosque and other rooms were added on both sides, forming a long courtyard enclosed by buildings of different dates. The brickwork is the main ornament: geometric patterns, carved terracotta and, in the later parts, glazed tile. Walking from one end of the courtyard to the other is a short lesson in how Central Asian funerary architecture developed from the Samanid to the Shaybanid era.
Visiting
The ensemble is both a monument and a place of ziyarat, and it was carefully restored in recent decades. Visitors pray in the mosque and at the tombs, so modest dress is expected. The courtyard is at its most beautiful in the morning and late afternoon, when shadows bring out the relief of the brickwork. Kyrk-Kyz lies close by, and the two fit easily into one outing.
