Urgench is the rail and air gateway to Khorezm, and several trains that do not reach Khiva still stop here. Taking one of them and a 40-minute taxi to Khiva can be the way round a sold-out fast train. The fast Jaloliddin Manguberdi service takes about three hours from Bukhara; the passenger trains from Tashkent and Andijan take about six.
Urgench station is in the centre of the regional capital, about 30 km and 40 minutes by taxi from Khiva. Bukhara station is in Kagan, about 15 km from the old city.
Tickets are sold on the official Uzbekistan Railways site, eticket.railway.uz, and in its UzRailways Tickets app, as well as at station ticket offices. Every ticket is issued to a named passenger, so you need the passport number when you buy and the passport itself when you board. Sales usually open about 45 days ahead, and the popular departures sell out well before that window closes in spring and autumn.
