Bukhara – Khiva train
Bukhara → Khiva · 450 km
The line from Bukhara to Khiva crosses the Kyzylkum desert and follows the Amu Darya for the last stretch, a journey that used to mean a long day in a car. The fast Jaloliddin Manguberdi train, named after the last Khwarazmshah, now does it in about three and a half hours, and a second fast train runs in the afternoon on some days. Slower passenger trains from Tashkent and Andijan take six and a half hours and leave Bukhara before sunrise.
Khiva station opened in 2018 just outside the town, a short taxi ride from the gates of Ichan-Kala. Bukhara station is in Kagan, about 15 km from the old city.
Tickets are sold on the official Uzbekistan Railways site, eticket.railway.uz, and in its UzRailways Tickets app, as well as at station ticket offices. Every ticket is issued to a named passenger, so you need the passport number when you buy and the passport itself when you board. Sales usually open about 45 days ahead, and the popular departures sell out well before that window closes in spring and autumn.
If you would rather not deal with the booking site, TourEast can buy the tickets for you on request and send them before you travel, or fold the train into a private itinerary with station transfers.

Good to know
- — This is one of the hardest tickets to get in season: there are only one or two fast trains a day, and tour groups book them early. Secure it before anything else.
- — If the fast train is full, the morning passenger trains are a fair alternative in a coupe compartment; the early start is the main drawback.
- — A private car across the desert takes 6–7 hours and allows stops at the Amu Darya viewpoint; we can arrange it if the trains are sold out.
- — Some trains terminate in Urgench rather than Khiva; Urgench is about 30 km from Khiva, roughly 40 minutes by taxi.
- — Carry water and something to eat: there is little food on board, and the desert stretch has no towns.
