Shakhrisabz, the birthplace of Amir Timur, is only about 90 km from Samarkand by road, but the railway goes the long way round through Karshi. The only direct train is a Sunday Afrosiyob from Tashkent that calls in Samarkand; on other days a car over the Takhtakaracha Pass, about an hour and a half, is the practical choice.
Samarkand station is about 15 minutes by taxi from the Registan. Shakhrisabz station is on the edge of town, a short taxi ride from the Ak-Saray palace.
Tickets are sold on the official Uzbekistan Railways site, eticket.railway.uz, and in its UzRailways Tickets app, as well as at station ticket offices. Every ticket is issued to a named passenger, so you need the passport number when you buy and the passport itself when you board. Sales usually open about 45 days ahead, and the popular departures sell out well before that window closes in spring and autumn.

- — Unless you travel on a Sunday, go by road: a private car over the pass takes about 1.5 hours and allows a stop at the top.
- — The pass road can close after heavy snow in winter; the longer road through Kitab and the railway via Karshi stay open.
- — Combine the Sunday train out with the Sunday afternoon train back for a simple day trip.
- — Shakhrisabz is compact; the Ak-Saray, Dorut-Tilavat and Dorus-Siadat lie along one pedestrian axis.
