Samarkand – Karshi train
Samarkand → Karshi · 150 km
Karshi, the capital of Kashkadarya province, is about an hour and ten minutes from Samarkand by Afrosiyob, and about an hour and a half on the Nasaf day train. Overnight trains to Termez also stop here in the small hours. For most visitors Karshi is a gateway rather than a destination: to Shakhrisabz, to the south and to Termez.
Samarkand station is about 15 minutes by taxi from the Registan. Karshi station is on the edge of the city; the drive from Karshi to Shakhrisabz takes about an hour and a half.
Tickets are sold on the official Uzbekistan Railways site, eticket.railway.uz, and in its UzRailways Tickets app, as well as at station ticket offices. Every ticket is issued to a named passenger, so you need the passport number when you buy and the passport itself when you board. Sales usually open about 45 days ahead, and the popular departures sell out well before that window closes in spring and autumn.

Good to know
- — The 08:56 Afrosiyob is the obvious choice; on Sundays it is replaced by a train that runs on to Shakhrisabz.
- — For Shakhrisabz itself, the road from Samarkand over the Takhtakaracha Pass (about 90 km) is much shorter than the railway via Karshi.
- — Karshi is a convenient break on the way south to Termez by car.
- — Night trains through Karshi suit travellers continuing to Termez; berths are not sold for this short leg on every train.
