Khiva has had a railway station since 2018, and the whole country can now be crossed by train in a single day. The fast Jaloliddin Manguberdi train leaves Tashkent at 07:00 and pulls into Khiva at 14:42, stopping in Samarkand, Bukhara and Urgench on the way. The alternative is an overnight sleeper of about fourteen hours, which saves a hotel night but not much time compared with a flight to Urgench.
The fast train leaves from Tashkent North (Tashkent Central); the 056 and 076 sleepers leave from Tashkent South. Khiva station is a short taxi ride from Ichan-Kala.
Tickets are sold on the official Uzbekistan Railways site, eticket.railway.uz, and in its UzRailways Tickets app, as well as at station ticket offices. Every ticket is issued to a named passenger, so you need the passport number when you buy and the passport itself when you board. Sales usually open about 45 days ahead, and the popular departures sell out well before that window closes in spring and autumn.

Good to know
- — Compare with the flight: Tashkent – Urgench takes under two hours, and Urgench airport is about 30 km from Khiva. The train wins on scenery, the plane on time.
- — In the sleepers, a coupe compartment with four berths is the comfortable minimum for a 14-hour night; platzkart is an open carriage.
- — Bedding is usually included on overnight trains; the conductor brings it after departure, and tea is available from the samovar at the end of the carriage.
- — Book the fast train as soon as your dates are firm: its economy seats on this end-to-end section are the most expensive and the most in demand.
- — Breaking the journey in Samarkand or Bukhara is easy, and often cheaper than the full ticket.
