Going back to the capital, the Afrosiyob trains cluster in the late afternoon and evening, which suits a full last day of sightseeing in Samarkand. Most of them start in Bukhara or Karshi and pick up in Samarkand; only one, the 767Ф, begins its run here, which makes it the easiest to get seats on. A dawn Afrosiyob and two morning day trains cover travellers who need to be in Tashkent by midday.

Samarkand station is about 15 minutes by taxi from the Registan. Afrosiyob, Sharq and Nasaf trains arrive at Tashkent North (Tashkent Central), near the city centre and the metro; overnight sleepers end at Tashkent South.

Tickets are sold on the official Uzbekistan Railways site, eticket.railway.uz, and in its UzRailways Tickets app, as well as at station ticket offices. Every ticket is issued to a named passenger, so you need the passport number when you buy and the passport itself when you board. Sales usually open about 45 days ahead, and the popular departures sell out well before that window closes in spring and autumn.

Good to know

— The 767Ф starts in Samarkand, so it often has seats when the Bukhara trains are full.
— Plan the last afternoon around a 17:40 or 18:15 departure: you can still see Shah-i-Zinda in the morning light and the Siab Bazaar after lunch.
— Allow 20–30 minutes for the taxi to the station and the security check; the station closes the platform a few minutes before departure.
— Several overnight sleepers also reach Tashkent from Samarkand between 05:00 and 09:40, but they arrive at Tashkent South and are better for budget travellers than for a comfortable night.
— If you fly home the same evening, leave at least three hours between the train arriving and your flight.
