From Urgench the fast trains from Khiva call in the morning, and two or three overnight passenger trains leave in the afternoon and evening, reaching Tashkent at dawn. Urgench is often the easier station to find seats at when Khiva departures are full.
Urgench station is about 40 minutes by taxi from Khiva. Fast trains arrive at Tashkent North (Tashkent Central); the 056 and 058 sleepers arrive at Tashkent South.
Tickets are sold on the official Uzbekistan Railways site, eticket.railway.uz, and in its UzRailways Tickets app, as well as at station ticket offices. Every ticket is issued to a named passenger, so you need the passport number when you buy and the passport itself when you board. Sales usually open about 45 days ahead, and the popular departures sell out well before that window closes in spring and autumn.

Good to know
- — For the 07:40 fast train, leave Khiva by 06:45.
- — The evening sleepers arrive in Tashkent around 08:20, early enough for a day in the capital or an afternoon flight.
- — A coupe compartment is worth the extra few dollars on a night of thirteen hours or more.
- — Pack a small overnight bag; big suitcases go under the lower berths or on the shelf above the door.
