Urgench, the capital of Khorezm and about 30 km from Khiva, is served by more trains than Khiva itself. The fast Jaloliddin Manguberdi train covers the distance in a little over seven hours, and a second fast train runs on some days. Overnight passenger trains from Tashkent and Andijan take about fourteen hours.
Fast trains leave from Tashkent North (Tashkent Central); the 056 and 058 sleepers leave from Tashkent South. From Urgench station a taxi to Khiva takes about 40 minutes.
Tickets are sold on the official Uzbekistan Railways site, eticket.railway.uz, and in its UzRailways Tickets app, as well as at station ticket offices. Every ticket is issued to a named passenger, so you need the passport number when you buy and the passport itself when you board. Sales usually open about 45 days ahead, and the popular departures sell out well before that window closes in spring and autumn.

- — Search for Urgench and Khiva separately on the booking site; each shows trains the other does not.
- — The overnight trains leave from Tashkent South, a different station from the fast trains; leave time for Tashkent traffic in the evening.
- — A taxi from Urgench to Khiva is inexpensive; your hotel in Khiva can send a driver to meet the train.
- — For a one-way overland trip, train in and fly back from Urgench airport, or the other way round.
