Tashkent – Bukhara train

Tashkent → Bukhara · 600 km

Bukhara is about four hours from Tashkent by Afrosiyob, with up to four high-speed departures a day: three in the morning and one in the evening that arrives just after midnight. The Sharq day train takes about six hours, and two overnight sleepers bound for Khiva and Kungrad drop passengers in Bukhara before dawn or late in the evening.

In Tashkent the Afrosiyob, Sharq and Nasaf trains use Tashkent North station (Shimoliy vokzal, also called Tashkent Central), next to Tashkent metro station. Most overnight sleeper trains leave from Tashkent South (Janubiy vokzal), on the southern edge of the city, so check the station printed on your ticket. Bukhara station is in the town of Kagan, about 15 km from the old city; allow 25–30 minutes by taxi to Lyabi-Hauz.

Tickets are sold on the official Uzbekistan Railways site, eticket.railway.uz, and in its UzRailways Tickets app, as well as at station ticket offices. Every ticket is issued to a named passenger, so you need the passport number when you buy and the passport itself when you board. Sales usually open about 45 days ahead, and the popular departures sell out well before that window closes in spring and autumn.

If you would rather not deal with the booking site, TourEast can buy the tickets for you on request and send them before you travel, or fold the train into a private itinerary with station transfers.

Good to know

  • — The 07:30 and 08:30 Afrosiyob trains put you in Bukhara for lunch and are the first to sell out; book them as soon as your dates are firm.
  • — Arriving at Kagan after midnight on the 772Ф is fine if your hotel knows you are coming; arrange the transfer in advance, as taxis at that hour are few.
  • — Many travellers combine the line with a stop: Tashkent – Samarkand on one train and Samarkand – Bukhara on another a few days later, booked as two tickets.
  • — Bring water and snacks: Afrosiyob has a small buffet car, but the Sharq and sleeper trains have only a tea urn and a trolley.
  • — Keep the passport handy until you are seated; conductors check it against the ticket at the carriage door.
