By day Bukhara belongs to the tour groups; in the evening it returns to its own: tea by Lyabi-Hauz, empty lanes, the Kalyan Minaret lit up. Four days for the monuments and the makers: suzani, miniature painting, blacksmiths, the potters of Gijduvan.

Most itineraries give Bukhara a day and a half. This one gives it four, which is how long the city takes to reveal itself. The old town is compact and largely closed to traffic, so you walk it with a licensed local guide at an easy pace: the pool of Lyabi-Hauz, the carved brick of the Magoki-Attori Mosque, the 16th-century trading domes, the Kalyan Minaret that Genghis Khan left standing, the Ark fortress and the 10th-century Samanid Mausoleum. The second half of the trip leaves the textbook sights behind. You drive out to Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa, the summer palace where the last emir mixed Russian and Central Asian taste, and to the memorial complex of Bahauddin Naqshband, founder of one of the great Sufi orders and still a place of pilgrimage. In Gijduvan a family of potters shows how their brown-and-ochre ware is thrown and glazed, and lunch is the town's famous kebab. The last day belongs to Bukhara's working crafts: suzani embroidery on the frame, miniature painting on handmade paper, and knives forged in a smithy behind the trading domes. Evenings are kept light, with tea on a rooftop facing the Kalyan Minaret and an optional folklore dinner in a 17th-century madrasah. The tour works on its own or as a slow coda to a longer Silk Road journey.

Tour Highlights

  • A full day on foot through the car-free old town, from Lyabi-Hauz to the Ark and the Samanid Mausoleum
  • Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa, the last emir's summer palace, and the Naqshband shrine outside the city
  • Gijduvan ceramics with a potter's family, and lunch of the town's famous kebab
  • Suzani embroiderers, miniature painters and a blacksmith's forge in the old town
  • Sunset tea on a rooftop facing the Kalyan Minaret
  • Time to linger: the pace leaves room for courtyards, tea houses and a hammam
