Four cities, four former capitals. The Registan lit up at night, tea by Bukhara's Lyabi-Hauz pond, a night inside the walls of Khiva, linked by the 250 km/h Afrosiyob and the Kyzylkum desert road. 8 days, private, with a guide in your language.
This is the route most travellers have in mind when they first picture Uzbekistan, covered at a pace that leaves room to look. It begins in Tashkent, where the Khast-Imam complex keeps one of the oldest surviving Qurans, then follows the Silk Road west: the Afrosiyob high-speed train to Samarkand, the road past the ruined caravanserai of Rabat-i-Malik to Bukhara, and a full day across the Kyzylkum desert to the walled town of Khiva.
The pace is deliberate. Samarkand and Bukhara each get two nights, so there is time for the Registan and Shah-i-Zinda as well as quieter places: the Afrasiab museum with its 7th-century Sogdian murals, the mulberry-paper mill at Konigil, the summer palace of the last Emir of Bukhara. Each city has its own licensed guide who knows it street by street, and one evening is spent at the table of a local family.
The tour is private: your own car and driver, your own guides and a departure date that suits you. Hotels are comfortable, centrally placed and chosen for the old towns, so most sightseeing starts on foot from the door. The trip ends with a short flight from Urgench back to Tashkent, which saves a second long desert drive.
