Twelve days, twelve doors into a different Uzbekistan: the silk workshops of Margilan, the Khan's palace in Kokand, the Registan, a night in a yurt near Lake Aydarkul, then Bukhara and Khiva. The fullest route, with the Fergana Valley that most tours skip.
The Grand Tour is for travellers who want the whole country, not only its postcards. After two days in Tashkent you cross the Kamchik Pass into the Fergana Valley, where silk is still reeled from cocoons in Margilan, potters in Rishtan paint their turquoise plates by hand and the last khans of Kokand left a palace faced in tiles. The road back over the pass and the evening Afrosiyob train bring you west to Samarkand.
From Samarkand the road leads north into the Kyzylkum, to a yurt camp near Lake Aydarkul, with a camel ride, a sunset over the desert and dinner around the fire. The next morning, by way of the sacred spring of Nurata and the potters of Gijduvan, you reach Bukhara, then cross the desert to Khiva, the walled town where the journey ends.
The tour is private: your own car and driver in each region, licensed local guides in every city, hotels chosen for comfort and character, and a TourEast manager on a local number throughout. The order of the days can change around flight schedules, and outside the yurt season, from November to March, the desert night becomes an extra night in a hotel.
