Few people make it out here, and that is the point. Clay fortresses two thousand years old, ships rusting in the sand where the sea used to be, a night in a yurt by the Aral and avant-garde art hidden in the desert far from Moscow. 7 days west of the usual Uzbekistan.
West of Bukhara the country changes. The Amu Darya spreads into a delta, the Kyzylkum presses in from the east, and on the hills above the farmland stand the walls of fortresses built by the kings of Khorezm two thousand years ago. This tour starts in Khiva, the best-preserved walled town in Central Asia, then crosses the river into Karakalpakstan to the ruins of Kyzyl-Kala, Toprak-Kala and Ayaz-Kala, with a night in a yurt camp below Ayaz-Kala.
In Nukus, the regional capital, the Savitsky Museum holds one of the largest collections of Russian avant-garde art in the world, gathered in Soviet times by a collector who saved paintings that Moscow had banned. Nearby lie the Mizdakhan necropolis and the Zoroastrian tower of silence at Chilpik. From Nukus the road runs north to Muynak, once a fishing port and now a town in the desert, where rusting trawlers lie on the old seabed more than a hundred kilometres from the water.
The last stage goes by four-wheel drive across the Ustyurt plateau to the present shore of the Aral Sea, where the night is spent in a simple yurt camp under a very large sky. The trip is private and runs with a local guide who knows Karakalpakstan well. Comfort is modest on the desert nights and the off-road driving is long, so it suits travellers who care more about the place than the pillow.
